Full Version: Top Ten Spectrum Moments

I was perusing the700level.com and I came across this list that one of the guys had written for puckdaddy. I agree with many of them. Some great moments were left out, though.

I want to know what you guys think of the list. Are there some moments you'd swap out? Which moments would you use to replace said swapped moments? Do you have your own Flyers-related story from these games or others?

#1 and #2 are exactly where I would put them. The others are all random after that.

A lot of interesting comments on there. Some people are real douchebags.

Thanks for the link!

I think this is my favorite comment (although there are a bunch of good ones):

"As a Penguins fan, I had not heard about the Soviet game. And I must say thank you for showing up those Commies biggrin.gif"

I didn't know you had to be a Flyers fan to know about the Soviet game.

The Spectrum is dying. It deserves several threads.

We could turn it into a 10 ten personal moments in the spectrum thread.

Maybe 5 is more readable

January 19, 1981 - I don't even remember who the Flyers were playing, or even if they won, but it was a Sunday night game. Reagan was being inaugurated the next day, and the Iran hostages were released that afternoon, with help from the Canadian government, after being in captivity for 444 days. Lou Nolan asked everyone to stand for the anthem, and then they played "O Canada" followed by Kate's recording of "God Bless America". To hear the entire Spectrum sing those 2 anthems gave me goosebumps, and I'm getting them again as I type this post.

Nice going. Now anything anyone else writes will seem insignificant by comparison! wink.gif

I agree with an earlier post about the rankings #1 & #2 being exactly where they are supposed to be.. I went to a 1987 Stanley Cup playoff game. And Nothing like what Moose said happened at that game. I went with my Dad. I had a good time. I have a bunch of Non flyers memories of the spectrum too.

Same here. I've seen a lot of great shows there.

It was just a regular season game, but I had rink-side seats when the Kings were in town. My seat was right next to the end of the King's player bench and gretsky was sitting on the other side of the plexiglass. I tried to get him off his game by staring close to the glass. It didn't work.

Later, Rob Blake skated by and slammed the glass in front of me with his stick and gave me a dirty look.

I climbed over the glas and beat him senseless.

Ok, that last part I made up.

I was there for the Tim Kerr ceremony. No big deal, but I was.

That reminds me of another moment - Flyers/Rangers, I wanna say 1982, and this was when Ron Duguay was with the Rags, and the Spectrum would wolf-whistle whenever he touched the puck (he did designer jeans commercials in the early '80's). Well, it was pre-game warmups, and we were giving Duguay the business down by the glass. This was also when the glass on the side boards was lower than the glass behind the nets, so you could really let them hear you. Well, I guess ol' Ronnie had heard enough, and he's skating along the blue line, he decides to unleash a slapper right at us. It hit on the glass, just below and in front of us.

I climbed over the glass and beat him senseless.

Ok, that last part I also made up.

But it shut us up, I'll tell you that much.

I'd say the average hockey player, even pretty boys like Duguay, are quite a bit tougher than your average non-hockey player.

Speaking of those jeans commercials, did you ever see the one with Duguay, Phil Esposito, BArry Back, and I forge the 4th guy (ron greshner maybe?), skating across the camera field wearing jeans, making that Vidal Sasson "OK" hand signal while the singers chant "oooh la la, Sasson!"

I may not be a famous hockey player, but at least no one can blackmail me with a humiliating appearance on a designer jeans commercial.

Yeah, I agree with the 'tough guy" comment (and that includes Crosby)...but as a stupid 17-year old back then, I didn't know any better.

And it was indeed Ron Greschner in that Sasson commercial. It's out there on YouTube. But Gresch ultimately had the last laugh - he got to tag supermodel Carol Alt.

Ahhh, memories. We used to call him Gay Duguay. Thanks for kicking his *ss (in your imagination). Good story though.

Speaking of tough hockey players...

I don't know if anyone remembers the Riddick Bowe fight that ended in a wild brawl in the boxing ring that spilled over into the audience. They were interviewing celebrity attendees afterwards (a lot of famous actors and singers), and many of them were clearly freaked out saying it was the scariest thing they've ever experienced. Then they get to Rod Gilbert and he's totally nonchalant. "I've seen a lot worse."

My top moment: Flyers Oilers Game 6 1987 - JJ Daigneault
I was 12 years old. I've never been the same since.

Even though a game seven vs. the oil was such a daunting task. It was such a great feeling, coming back, winning game 6, especially when nobody in the NHL or world gave the flyers a chance - at all - in this series. Especially considering all of the injuries. Poulin, Kerr, etc.

Ugh. The injuries! That's our curse, isn't it?

Yeah, Game 6 in 1987 - for those under the age of 35, the greatest Flyers playoff moment. Definitely should have been on the list in the first place instead of that cutesy Flyers Wives' Carnival reference.

I have another pair from the 1980s:

Game 6 Wales Conference Finals in 1985. Dave Poulin's two-man shorthanded breakaway goal extends a precarious one-goal lead to two, Flyers win 3-0, outshoot Quebec 36-15, Pelle gets his third shutout of the playoffs and club goes to Stanley Cup.

November 14, 1985. The Pelle Lindbergh Memorial Game. Tied with the Oilers 1-1 after two, the Flyers score four times in the third to win 5-3. Darren Jensen gets his first NHL win, the club takes their 11th straight victory.

Keep it comin guys. I was 8, and we'd already left the Spectrum when I went to my first game
eparico
I don't remember if this was in the Spectrum or not but, here goes...

The night Mario Lemieux skated off the ice for the "last" time and all the Flyers fans, as scary and as ruthless as we are, gave him a standing ovation. A class act by fans who almost never cheer for an opposing team player...let alone a Penguin! ! I wasn't at the game, but watching it on TV brought a tear to my eye (not too many tears, after all, he was a Penguin) tongue.gif It was a well deserved ovation for a class act player. Kudos to the Flyers fans!

Nope, not Spectrum

One Flyers game I was surrounded by four of the most foul-mouthed obnoxious peices of white trash ever. It was basically two and a half hours of non-stop inappropriate commentary. AIDS and child molestation jokes, cursing, flatulence, and anything else you shouldn't say or do at all, much less in public. It was so funny I had to go home and write a song about it, which my band performed for a few years. I have a recording of it somewhere. If I ever find it, I'll load it up online.

As long as there are several with my favorite Flyer, Pelle Lindbergh. smile.gif
