After being traded twice in two summers, it appears Joffrey Lupul won't be moving this offseason.

According to the Team 1260 Radio in Edmonton, Lupul has agreed to terms on a four-year extension with the Philadelphia Flyers. An announcement is expected to be made on Monday.

Last season, Lupul scored 20 goals and added 26 assists for 46 points in 56 games with the Flyers. He added four goals and six assists in 17 playoff games.

After a successful junior career with the Medicine Hat Tigers, Lupul was drafted seventh overall by the Anaheim Ducks in 2002.

In two full seasons with Anaheim, the Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta native amassed 41 goals and 87 points. During the lock-out season, he scored 30 goals with Cincinnati of the American Hockey League.

Following the 2005-06 campaign, Lupul was dealt to the Edmonton Oilers in the Chris Pronger trade. The 24-year-old struggled in the Alberta capital with just 28 points in 81 games and a -29 rating.

That led to another trade, this time to the Flyers along with blueliner Jason Smith. Defenceman Joni Pitkanen and veteran Geoff Sanderson were sent to the Oilers.

Good. I like Lupul. Guy was on fire before he got hurt last season, and when he came back he was never really the same. If he's healthy all season..gonna put up some nice numbers.
FlyersGirl
Rumor is that it is $4.25 per year which is a good deal if true.

Guess this means Noobs is not being re-signed.

That would be fantastic, slightly less than 2x what he makes now. It helps with next years cap too, if it continues to increase at the 5.9 mil average it's established thus far, this gives us a little breathing room.

This is promising. His various injuries barely set him back this past season, so it will amazing to see him stick around. He has a lot of fight to be a flyer for the next four years.

I'm flipping out with excitement.

no, you shouldn't ask. i can't have a favorite player yet, because i haven't been watching hockey long enough. which is why october needs to hurry the heck up!

Technally, when you look at deal now, we lost smith and they lost pikanen. So basically if they have Sanderson still, its Lupul for Sanderson which we aggresively won big time.

I was worried that they wouldn't be able to sign him next year but now my worries are over

I guess this soildifiys Knubles departer. The Flyers are overstocked on RW and are 2 million over the cap, i could see LA trading for him becuase they are 12 million under the cap

I don't think that will be an issue. We have 2 years to work something out and by then the cap will probably be up a bit more and some of the players taking up cap now will be gone.

Lupul's new cap hit won't kick in until 09-10, at which point Knuble will be finished with his contract here anyway.

I'm glad to hear this, but since I don't know the cap hit yet, I don't know how glad I should be.

Just one thing: no more concussions. I think his health is the biggest risk in keeping him.

Good for us and good for Lupes.

Yes Yes Yes. I love Lupul. He deserves to be here. He has great chemistry with Richie as well. smile.gif

4 dollars and 25 cent per year.

That's one heck of a deal. tongue.gif
Flyersrule25
If this report is true then this is a great deal. This again proves that Homer is probably one of if not the best GM's in the NHL today. He is so aggressive
Retire#27
At $4.25 million it's a good deal if he can build on what he did last season. He's had some extremely inconsistent play so far in his career, but he's young, so hopefully 07-08 was a sign of things to come. *crossing fingers*

Report: Lupul signs four-year extension

Team 1260 Radio in Edmonton reported yesterday that Flyers right winger Joffrey Lupul has agreed to a four-year extension with the club, to be announced Monday. The report has been picked up by TSN and other outlets. The Flyers have not yet confirmed the report.

The deal, which supposedly pays $4.25 million per season, would pre-empt Lupul from becoming a free agent after the 2008-09 season.

After struggling in Edmonton, Lupul had a strong first half the 2007-08 season for the Flyers. A bruised spine and concussion suffered in a January 5 collision with Derian Hatcher and a high ankle sprain sustained on February 9 caused him to miss significant time in the second half. Lupul scored the series winning goal in overtime in the seventh game of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series against Washington, but played inconsistently overall during the postseason.

When Lupul used both his speed and strength, he's very effective. When he overrelies on finesse and his heavy shot alone, he disappears. Even in the first half of last season, he showed some the streakiness that had marked his prior seasons. But at age 25 (his birthday is on September 23), he should now be hitting his prime.

A look inside the numbers of his 2007-08 season:

Regular season
First 16 GP: 6 G, 9 A, 14 PTS, 3 PPG
Next 11 GP: 0 G, 2 A, 2 PTS, 0 PPG
Next 9 GP: 10 G, 8 A, 18 PTS, 4 PPG (two hat tricks in one week)
Next 3 GP: 0 PTS (injured vs Toronto 1-15-08, returned 2-9-08)
Next 5 GP: 2 G, 2 A, 4 PTS, 0 PPG (injured vs Montreal 2-16-08, returned 3-12-08)
Final 12 GP: 2 G, 5 G, 7 PTS, 0 OPPG

Playoffs
vs. Wash: 7 GP, 1 G, 1 A, 2 PTS, -1, 1 PPG
vs. Mont: 5 GP, 1 G, 3 A, 4 PTS, +1, 1 PPG
vs. Pitt: 5 GP, 2 G, 2 A, 4 PTS, +1, 0 PPG

wouldnt that be a substantial increase over his salary for this year but with the increasing money in contracts and salary in the end it would be a steal come 2-3 years down the road?
Nick
its double his current salary but i think he has the poteinal to score 40 goals down the road if he is ever healthy

If it was double, he'd be getting $5.8M. Agree with you on the 40 goal potential though.

im very happy with this. i think lupul is going to be great.

This.

Unless Knuble has an exceptional season I don't think they'll resign him next year. I think they'll let he and Hatch go then concentrate on Scottie and the goaltending.

In addition to Scottie and a goalie, we'll need to pick up at least 2 more d-men.

also to work on hartnell filling in Knubles spot in front of the net, especially on the power play

Yeah, it is slightly less than double than his current cap hit. I think it is a very good deal especially when you compare it to Carter's and Hartnell's deal. He is making just about the same amount of money as Hartnell, but I think he is a better offensive player. It's also a good deal because he would certainly be worth more if they waited until next summer to sign him.

I could see them letting Scottie go. Downie should be ready for a top 9 role next season if he isn't ready this season so he could take Scottie's spot.
