Good for them. They both need to grow. And they weren't going to do it in the cesspool known as the AHL.

Yeah, good for them. I just get the feeling that we'll never see either one coming back, though.

Ruzicka didn't have much of a future in the NHL, but it would be nice to have him and Tolpeko as depth in case of injuries. It's a huge blow to the Phantoms, too.

I don't see the Phantoms defense letting in more than 80 goals this year though, so I don't think it will matter.

Have we signed a Phantoms goalie yet?

That's good because I am not sure if their offense can score more than 80 goals now.

I haven't heard anything about a goalie signing yet.

Since they are now going to play in Russia, does this free up any money for the cap limit?

I don't think minor league affects the cap.

Restricted free agent forward Denis Tolpeko, who played 26 games at wing with the Flyers this season, has signed to play next season for Dynamo Moscow. The Flyers retain his NHL rights.

A Russian winger, by way of the Western Hockey League, Denis Tolpeko brought some hustle to his fourth-line role while splitting time between the Flyers and Phantoms of the AHL. Tolpeko doesn't appear to have great upside, but could have earned a regular job if not for his decision to sign in Russia.

He was decent but lazy. That's true. Remember two seasons ago, he was called up, but he wasn't going to play. So he decided on his own half not to join the team in practice and on the bike, and got yelled at, etc.

Ruzicka played junior hockey in my hometown. He is just another hockey player with a boat load of talent but will only use it when it suits him. Sometimes he would dazzle us with moves most can only dream of doing but mostly he couldn't care less.

I don't know if anyone has noticed, but Ruzička has had a great start in the KHL. He was around top 5 in scoring a while ago and is still around top 10 (many players being 1 point apart) outscoring the likes of Jagr and Radulov for example. I don't really expect him to keep up this pace, but it makes me wonder if Holmgren would be interested in giving him another look if he can keep this up since the Flyers still own his NHL rights.
An interesting matchup today between the Moscow teams Spartak and Dynamo. The Russian TV is webcasting the game for free
here. Game time is 7:30 pm Moscow time, so I guess that's 11:30 am Philly time.
Spartak (wearing red/white) features the ex-Flyers
Štefan Ruzička (#14) and
Branko Radivojevič (#92) while
Denis Tolpeko (#53), Dmitri Afanasenkov (#27), Danny Markov (#95) and
Alexei Zhitnik (#77) play for
Dynamo (wearing blue/white). (Tolpeko has had a much slower start in the season leading his team in minus and penalty minutes and is yet to score a goal this season.)

I agree on that. I don't think he ever got a real chance with the Flyers, but I don't know if he ever really earned one either.
As for the game today, he wasn't at his best. He played on the first line with Radivojevič who I think did better. Tolpeko was just invisible, but the other Dynamo's ex-Flyers played well. Afanasenkov had two goals as Dynamo won 2-4.

For some reason, I read nuts instead of guts.
I'll miss Thoresen and Tolpeko, but definitely Thoresen the most. Ruzicka has all the talent in the world, when he applies himself. Thoresen, on the other hand, had less talent but always seemed to give everything.

I think Tolpeko was a good energy player for the 4th line. Thoresen is just too slow and talentless for the NHL.

Tolpeko kind of reminded me of Dmitry Afanasenkov. Didn't really do a ton for the team but he was fun to watch play and he was always on the verge of doing something good, but could never quite get over that hump.
