The Philadelphia Flyers announced that they have acquired 6’0”, 200-pound defenseman Janne Niskala (YAH-nee NIHS-kah-lah) from the Nashville Predators in exchange for forward Triston Grant and their seventh round pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, according to club General Manager Paul Holmgren.

This guy puts up numbers. Not exactly who I wanted from Nashville though. I thought he (Niskala) signed in Russia next season??

I bet this means alot of trades are coming.

Brophy
I guess this means Jones is gone. We have a stock pile of 5-6 D men. Where are the 3-4 at?

No he didn't i guess. He has pretty good AHL numbers so hopefully he will be okay.
We are overloading on Defense though.

19 goals? Nice.

This is what I heard too, so this is really weird.

I like this move a lot, though. This guy broke the all time scoring record for defensemen in the Swedish league and had an impressive year in the AHL. I think Nashville is foolish to let him go.

Grant has become a victim of the Flyers depth at forward. He had a few chances with the big club and didn't show too much. This should be a good thing for him. I expect he will get good time in Nashville. Niskala is a defenseman that can score goals. He could be a really strong player for us. Yay for Fins!

It's good to see Homer wheeling and dealing all over the place. It takes the sting out of the Eminger trade.
GoFlyers68
Im really excited about this trade, it should be interesting though because he is signed next year.
Brophy
I don't get the Russia thing.

I can't wait for Bourdon to get up to the NHL. He sounds like he will be the real deal.

I just read that he had a deal in place with HC Atlant (the Russian league team) if no NHL team would sign him before July 1. So I guess everything is settled. smile.gif

On Niskala
QUOTE
An offensively skilled defenseman. Niskala is mostly known for his scoring ability on the power play, where he is very valuable with his powerful and accurate slapshot. Is very mobile and a good skater. His defensive skills are somewhat questionable, however.

alright. we're stockpiling defensemen. but not any really top four guys. i mean. Eminger and this kid could develop into top 4 guys, but idk if they're there yet. i still think Liles or Streit are needed additions.

I don't think any team would want to take on his cap hit. Clarke over paid Goat, and its biting us in the @ss. If he was being paid less i think he'd be on the flyers roster. he's way better then Vandy ever was and i think Goat's demotion is an indication of the unfortunate expense of his contract and not of his talent.... if he is singed off waivers we would still have to split his $ with the team that takes him... i dont think anyone would trade for him.

I know Homer is trying to create depth for the organization on the blue line, but when is he going to add someone big, who can have an impact now? Don't get me wrong, i trust Homer, i'm just curious as to what he is getting ready for?
Gagne12
Im not complaining. Its not a really big deal. It could of been a deal just for the Phantoms.
FlyerGuy
I don't mind that trade at all and to me it's looking like Homer is preparing for a bigger trade or stocking up of D in the case he can't sign a decent UFA.
PALE PWNR
I like this were aquiring prospective D-Men who have some skill but wouldn't have been given the time of day in their clubs. Maybe giving them the shot they need we stumble upon a diamond in the rough I'm really happy with the numbers this guy has, we really haven't had a Offensive D in a long time lets just hope he works out better then Pitkenen smile.gif

I agree on GOAT. I just hope these guys dont push GOAT down the drain even more so.

To me Homer is rolling the dice on Niskala and Syvret to see if there is a diamond in the rough.

It's certainly biting Gauthier in the *ss. But you're right, I don't think Homer would let him languish in the AHL if anybody wanted his contract, and had anything remotely valuable to offer for him.

We all need to get used to the idea that this just may not be in the cards this offseason. Last offseason, the mantra was "slow and steady", not "add someone big" and despite the team's overachivement this year, I don't see any reason for Homer to alter that game plan.

It not a big deal, only because you don't know who he is right now.

Just wait... Any deal for the Phantoms is ultimately one for the Flyers
OrangeAndBlack
Maybe Hatch told Homer that he IS playing next year, and Homer knows he won't be able to attract a top free agent D-man. I like this move though, for Niskala. at 26, he probably won't blossom into a superstar, but he should be able to step up and play with poise on the big club when there are injuries, at the very least.

I hope they don't either. Its really not fair to a guy who can have a big physical impact on the game. Niskala and Syvret are both pretty young though, so they still have some time and room to grow into their full potential. It's a low risk high reward situation for sure.

I disagree. IMO, in this FA period there are many qualified defenseman that come with a reasonable price tag and could help the team instantly. I'm not suggesting we trade to acquire a top 4 dman, but what I am suggesting is that we need, and should go after a top 4 dman, such as Striet or Liles. Defense is out weakest position right now and it needs upgrades that exceed Eminger or Niskala.
Cunning Linguist
I'm confused by this:

But I think I get your point. I'm not saying I wouldn't like to see Homer snag a big name, or that doing so wouldn't help the team... just that it may not be in the cards this season financially. We're still going to be walking a fine line under the cap. If these UFAs ask for more than we can spend, Homer will have no choice but to wait another year, and see how the new prospects develop. I don't want this to happen, but I think we need to accept the fact that it's a distinct possibility.

Which is why Homer is starting to stockpile cheap prospects with a high upside. If he can find something good out of Syvret, Eminger, and/or Niskala (or someone else we don't know about yet), then bully for him. It's risky, but he's proven to be a pretty good judge of talent since he took over, so again, "In Homer We Trust".

Or he's a mastermind who is stockpiling trade bait (your superstar for our 3 solid prospects/ 3rd and 4th liners)

Interesting. When did the Nashville Predators become our farm team? Did I miss the memo?
Dave
Well, we've acquired a D-man who is 'known for his good offensive skills and his power play scoring ability' which is something we need. I agree, he's not going to turn into a superstar at 26, but his PP skills will be very interesting to watch. Puts up big numbers. I liked Grant but I have a feeling this is going to be a good trade!

On a side note, he's played in England, too with Manchester Storm smile.gif

I'm not sure about this trade. Homer is stocking up d-man and letting some of are depth at forward go. Does this trade mean jones isn't going to be resigned?

Now this guy pretty much showed that he is ready for a shot at the big club with the way he played last year..

I think he is going to be step in right away and show that is the man Bold..? yea i know cool.gif

I think Jones will be signed.

I would like to see us let Jones walk and bring up Gauthier =]
Chocula78
This trade seems unusual to me now that we have a lot of dmen stocked. I would not be surprised if we trade Jones or let him walk. This might free up enough money to go after a big name FA.

I'd rather keep Jones here and Gauthier still be called up and make Hatcher retire.
dtxaxp
just when grant was starting to come around I would have loved to get this kid time in a flyers uniform he would have been a great flyer 10 goals 11 assist and 191 pims but we trade toughness for skill that trade ussually works out
ibanez
We seem to have a real close relationship with Nashville. It all started with the Forsberg trade....
