I say it is good also.

It is a risk though.

We get a defenseman who can jump in the NHL right away. If he fits in our system and reaches his original potential we get a heck of a player. I don't see his situation in Washington as much different then Coburn's situation with ATL.

I could be wrong it may be a terrible trade but as of now I like it.

Stop being such babies. I bet you've never even seen the kid play.

I think I like it

I believe it's a good trade. It's kind of hard to say it's a terrible trade because 1) you don't know how Eminger will turn out healthy in a new setting, and 2) you never know when drafting a goalie. It is very hit-or-miss. Eminger could turn out to be someone that just needs to be consistently healthy and needed a new system. I don't expect him to be a star and it is taking a chance but to me I like his chances for the 4th pair and maybe even competing with Jones (who I expect to be signed) if/when he underperforms.
Eggplant
Undecided, but I'm optimistic

Numbers aren't everything

To be fair he only got to play like 18 reg season games with the Caps this year so it's not like he could 've had great numbers anyway. I think his most impressive stat is how many games the capitals won when he was actually in the line up instead of the press box for a change.

I noticed that stat. I don't know exactly how important it is but it's gotta mean something.

Good trade, thinning out the forwards and salary are needed. Giroux, Downie and Gange filling in spots.
We need defenseman now, with Modry, Smith gone and a questionable Hatcher.
Even if it is just to get OK defensemen, it gives us a workable situation if injuries and or trade openings happen.
Hey, they can't all be Kimmos with Kimmo sized salaries.

p.s. numbers are nicely setup at http://www.nhlnumbers.com.

So perhaps someone can tell me why this guy is a healthy scratch??? I don't really care who we CAN compare it to; I'd rather hear from a horses mouth as to why this player (worthy of our first round pick) was sitting in the press box as a healthy scratch??? Attitude problem? Didn't fit the system? Caps fan would be helpful here, por favor. Because unless there is a legit excuse for why he's sitting, I'm not happy for this trade.

I'm not a Caps fan but I'll take a stab at it. Obviously, he was injured a lot and when he played didn't put up the greatest of numbers, so I don't think towards the end there that the Caps were very happy with him. I also believe that the defense they had was good enough to where they didn't want to put him in. This could be a case where a change of scenery is a godsend.

I went with bad. I dont think he is worth a first rounder, on the other hand I will try to be optimistic about him. He's got upswing...he played decent enough in the few games I 've seen him...I just dont like giving up a pick.

I can kinda explain but honestly I don't get his reason for sitting so much either. I think one of Emmy's problem was his decision making skills, a lot of times he was indecisive/hesitant. Other than that he lacked a degree of consistancy. But, I think the coaches were wrong to sit him so much because he did play better than lots of the D (which isn't saying much wink.gif)

So your explanation is more or less stating that due to his injuries and lack of production, this guy is a 7th d-man??? Now I'm not saying their defense sucked, but if they thought all 6 men were a better fit than this guy, I don't see how the city of Brotherly Love is gonna change his production or lack-thereof.

Good. I trust Homer. He filled a need and managed to get a better pick. We're pretty tight against the cap and Eminger may be cheap because of his numbers and health concerns. Considering the money we have to spend, I think Eminger could be a steal. Plus, you can't look too closely at his numbers, he hasn't really had that much of a supporting cast around him until recently. (No offense, Caps Troll.)

I dunno. I like what it gets the Caps a lot. I also think he has the potential to take off if given different scenery. He's not a bad player at all and I'll be sad to see him go.
specterlaw
Look you guys. I think the Flyers see Eminger like they saw Coburn when we acquired Coburn. On the cusp. this kid was a stud as a junior player and then had an inauspicious start as a pro. Rmemeber D-men take longer to develop. Remember why Coburn was signed to 1.2 mil a season? Because he had not yet lived up to his junior stats. Now Coburn is probably worth 3.5 - 4 million and we got him cheap. I think it is the same thing with Eminger. I think we may sign him for a 1 million and he will maybe be a stud. somebody on the scouting staff liked him and remember Stevens was a D-man too, and probably saw something in this guy. I also think that trading RJ means we are going to sign Campbell. We will have the cap space if Hatch retires. If we had Umby and Campbell on the same team that would be weird when Campell created Umberger prior claim to fame (before the studlike performance against the Habs) by being clothes-lined by Campbell. I think Snyder said I want Campbell and Homer is trying to make it happen. I liked Umby, and I wish him well with a 4+ million contract in Columbus, but somebody had to go so we can get another monster RFA D-man acquisition. I think Campbell is going to look great in orange and black. Remember Giroux will be up this year and we all knew somebody was going to leave.

Well he was a first round pick and we also got a third in this deal. Look for the Flyers to move up and steal Matt Carle's baby brother, David Carle. BTW David Carle's favorite team - "Flyers".
jefjd
I don't like that the Caps used our pick to draft Carlson who I would have liked to see with the Flyers, I don't like that Emminger has been inconsistent, often injured, and sort of a defensive liability for the Caps, and I don't like our odds of doing much more to renovate our blueline with our cap situation being tight.

So I don't like this very much, but I'll hope that I'm wrong.

I am not an Eminbger fan and I hate that the Caps used the pick to draft Carlson. I am not sure he is worth a first, but there is a bit of potential there and he is young enough that he just may bloom with us.

i am very disappointed the flyers didnt take carlson with the 27th pick..i really wanted him n the caps stole him ....however i still liked what homer did today

they're rookies and played 20 games each. noone here can pretend they know stuff about carlson or eminger you gotta see what happens and trust homer he knows what he is doing thats why he does it.

Last year, the Caps were 17-5-2 with him in the lineup and he was a +2 in the playoffs, according to NHL.com.

EDIT: From Meltzer
QUOTE
The pick is traded to Washington for Steve Eminger and the 84th pick. I'm not wild about Eminger, although he was originally a first round pick. At this point, Eminger is basically a 6th defenseman type.

Wonder what this means for Lasse Kukkonen? I suspect he's played his last game as a Flyer..

I don't get why. If Smith walks, Kukkonen could fill in nicely in the shot blocking category. Plus, he's under contract for a cap hit of $.875 mil. Why part ways with one of our cheapest d-men in tight times?

I'm glad you did bookmark it. My brother and sister in law live in dc, and his company has season tickets to the caps. I went to about 6 games, and 1 playoff game vs the flyers, and can honestly say that I am not impressed with how he played this year. He can move pretty good, but he needs alot of work in his own zone. I'm not saying that the kid isn't going to pan out to be pretty good in years to come, but we could have used someone who will help out in the very near future.

At #27, you're not looking at "someone who will help out in the very near future." Doughty, Bogosian - those are high picks that are likely to jump right onto an NHL team. So either, we can wait for an 18 year old drafted prospect to develop (which who knows how long that can take - and they may end up being a bust) or we can see what we can do with Eminger on our team right now. I'll take the latter. Give the guy a chance here in Philadelphia, he could end up surprising you.

Also, nice to see he's happy to have been traded here:
QUOTE
"It didn't hurt that the Flyers were the last team I played against," he said. "If there was one team I wanted to go to, that's it. It's hard to leave the friends that I've made in Washington. But hockey-wise, I needed a new start. And Philadelphia is the perfect place for it."

I was pointing out that we could use defenseman that could help us out in the near future(i.e. liles, meszaros), not an 18 year old prospect(although you never know, but unlikely). Eminger is a RFA who made 1mil last season, he will probably be looking at a little raise.
SolidSnakeUS
To be honest, it could be a lot worse. Anyways, he was such a thorn in the Flyers' side, it's a good thing they got him then.
