Full Version: Remember That Guy Who Made the Signs?
Philadelphia Flyers > Forum > General Flyers Discussion
PHI Flyers10
I wasn't around then but you can see when you watch the 10 Greatest Games there's a guy with curly hair during the games who has like 6 different signs during the game. My dad was born in '70 and he said he thinks the guy just made the signs in the stands. It makes sense because they'd always describe the situation on the ice that happened like 15 seconds before he held up the sign. You guys know who I'm talking about, curly hair, expressionless face...

Anyways do you guys know if he made them in the stands or just made a bunch and brought them to the games hoping something on his sign would relate to the game?
pat
I remember that guy, I have to say he made them at the game, but not sure.
ROMANO
wow who doesnt know the sign guy? he still has season tickets right behind the goalie. i'm pretty sure he's had season tickets since '67. all last year he rocked the "keep the faith" sign. hes pretty old now but i see him at every game still.
PhilaFlyer85
He sits in Row 2, Section 107 right behind where the Flyers shoot twice. I sat in that section many times last year since I bought tix from a season ticket holder in Row 16...the guy has the BEST signs!

He makes his signs before the games; he brings a whole briefcase to every game and I talked to him last year after the one game; that *is* the guy that's been there from the beginning and he keeps his signs "tabbed" like a middle school student would keep their trapper keeper.

I sat in that section looking for him in the second row *right* after a goal was scored and he would ALREADY have the sign in the air; he's so automatic with his signs and no, I don't know how he does it.

Some of my favorite from last year were...

Forsberg Goal - "Peter Scoresberg!"
Gagne Goal - Simon Gagn-Yea!
Eager hit - "Free Checking"
Eager Fight - "Eye of the T-Eager" (you know, like Rocky : )
Marty Biron - "To Infinity and Biron!"
When opposing goalie turned around for a drink of water - "You'll Choke"
On a powerplay or shootout - "Insert Puck Here" (with an arrow pointing to the net)
When the fans cheered after a Carter goal for the Dec. 23rd game - "Holiday Cheer!"
Zhitnik Goal - "Zhit Happens!"

He wasn't at many games in the second half of last season; I *really* hope that he is back next year - I'm sure he will be though.

With all of these new players, you can be sure that he's sitting at home, thinking of creative signs for each and every player. I am still amazed at how fast he could pull those signs out for specific players!!

For those of you who don't know who we're talking about, here are a few candid shots of him!

He's awesome!! Always awesome to watch at the games.

I'm sure he stashes a bunch of poster board under his seat and has a full collection of multi-colored sharpies ready to go for each game.

I see he's a fan favorite. I always like how he makes the straightest facial expression. I didn't know he was still around. I'll look for him this season. I'll tell my pop that that's "the sign guy".
Flyers1620
In the 80's, it seemed like PRISM had a camera just on him.

I think he got married at a game back in the 70's, I remember a picture of him at a game in a Tux with a woman in a wedding gown next to him.

Back in the 80's NYC had an advertisement that was new "I love NY" Well when the raggers were in town he had about a dozen of these small signs that said "I love NY". He painted a 0 on them with a line running through it. During warmups and the beginning of each period he would hand them out to the fans near the glass. Everyone would plaster them on the glass when the Raggers were down that end. There was a french cand. on the team whose name eludes me right now, but we called him Pepe Le Pugh and he would go nuts during warmups he would give us the bird and then when he saw sign mans helpers he would sneak another bird in. Hey sign man you need to break them out again this year

Excellent Pic/Find!

His signs are always written big, very neat, and on the front AND the back so that the players on the ice can read them as well as the fans sitting behind him. He's a clever guy laugh.gif

His name is Dave Leonardi and he lives in the Trenton area, I believe. When I lived in the Philly area back in the '70s and
early '80s, I used to touch base with him every so often. Nice guy, diehard hockey fan and probably has 10,000 stories...

I remember him when I was a little kid going to the Spectrum. Is he the one that wears jerseys from outside the NHL,like the OHL and ECHL. I know that the jerseys may not be from those leagues, but I know the aren't NHL teams. I sit at the other goal way up top and when I look across to the other side with my binoculars, he always sticks out with those jerseys. A lot of times you'll see that guy on the big screen when there is action behind or in front of the goal.
PassDaPuk
I remember when I had season tickets in Section M at the Spectrum, he would have a bunch of signs with him. I'm not sure he made them at the game although I was in the last row of Section M and he was closer to the glass.
