Who is the front runner for captain this year? Personally I think it should go to Gagne. He proved when Forsberg left last year that this was his team and he will continue to grow with all the talent he's been surrounded with.

He should have been the captain over Forsberg last off-season.

Welcome to the board. Someone had already started this thread a while ago, but to answer your question. I think it should be Sami Kapanan. Foresburg proved that sometimes your best player does not make him the best choice for captain.

nah, I wouldn't want Kappy for captain, he might get knocked out again and then there goes down another one. I would see maybe Smith (if they extend his contract) if not than Timmo or Briere (maybe) but in the long run, Richards is the guy, well until his time is here.

I always thought it should be Gagne, but I heard he did not want the job. But in the long haul I think it will be Mike Richards.

SJ, anyone could get knocked down again, though. Kappy could take another devastating hit, but he hasn't for a while now.

To the OP, I think that Gagne would make a fitting captain...I'm just worried about it messing up his game. Also, he seems more soft-spoken - I think from now on the team needs a locker-room presence, someone that'll speak up and take care of business. Is Gagne that person?

if you are refering to the hit on him from tucker in the 03-04 playoffs then that has nothing to do with anything because he was fine like 5 minutes after the hit

yea I was, he didnt get knocked out but close to it, his eggs were surely scrambled for those 5 minutes, still I wouldn't want him as captain. He can still have an A.

Either Kappy or Smith. Kappy has been a leader on this team even without the "C". Smith is the other choice since he has been a captain for a long time in Edmonton. But in 2 yrs I say it should go to Richards.

I do not think that Gagne wants to be captain much like Desardins and that Kappy's best years are behind him. Richards has yet to step up his play when the team needs it, but he is still young. I believe that Smith is the Primeau type captain that we have been looking for. He steps up his play physically when needed.

i really dont like the idea of giving it to a new guy, but if one of the new additions gets it i want it to be smith.

The new captain has to be Timonen. Smith is only signed through one year, Briere I don't think needs to be burdened with the C, Richards will be captain worthy in a few years but why wait it out? Timonen will be here for a while and will be the center of our PP and defense. Timonen would be my choice with Kapane and Gagne wearing the A's.

If I'm correct Richie said he wasn't ready to be captain just yet(I know Homer said that he is).It wouldn't make sense to me to give a guy the "C" who blatantly turned it down

If Richards doesn't want it, but everyone think's he's ready, he should be made captain.

If Richards is not ready it is possible they will give it to Hatcher since he is done after next season. Hatcher will retire after next year, I hope he retires tonight, or he will play somewhere else. The captaincy will be vacant once again. After that Richards might be ready. Richards will be 24 by then and that is still young. Its that or Timonen will get the "C" and wear it for at least 4 seasons. Then Richards will be ready for sure.

he's just being really humble and kinda shy about the topic, in all the times i've seen richie interviewed he always tries and shy's away from questions about his improvement and being a leader he also always give's credit to other people. when they interviewed him about possibly getting named an all-star and if he thought he was he responded six dozen time's with " i don't know" so i'm pretty sure no matter what that richie will get it b/c i don't think they'll name kimmo or somebody else captain and then 2 seasons later take it away.

Well its simple do what Buffalo did with Briere and Durey, Split the C basically I would love to have Gagne , Kimmo or Richy take the C, in October it should either be Kimmo or Gagne, but as the season progesses and the leader "Mike Richards" emerges, then he should take it from there, and hold it his whole 12 year + stay in Philly.

I would take Kimmo over Richards easily.

For people who want Richards now can you explain why he would be a better choice then Timonen?

Gagne didn't want it before. I think that'll continue. Give the C to Timonen.. An A to Gagne and an A to Richards. That makes the most sense to me.

I know they aren't going to take away an "A" from Richards or Gagne, unless one becomes Captain, but why not give Carter the A. With his contract he needs to play at that level and I think it'd be a great show of confidence (you know, besides the contract lol)

In my opinion, Gagne fails to exude any type of leadership ability. Then again, i only see what he does on the ice....so i could be wrong.

Even if he believed he was ready to become the captain he would not have said so when he was asked about before. Smith was still on the team at that point and there was still a possibility that he may be resigned. Richards is not the type of player who would allow somthing like this to possibly create tension in the locker room if Smith resigned after he said that he was ready and wanted to be captain the following season.

It will be either Kimmo or Richie. Even thought Richie said he wasn't ready, Holmgren announced he thinks Richie is ready.

I agree with your choices for the most part, though not Gagne even if healthy. The guy simply doesn't strike me as a leader.

Kimmo wore the C in Nashville so that wouldn't be a stretch, if we give it to him now when would Richie get it?

Richards is what 23? I'm not real worried about rushing him into being a captain.
