Full Version: quick cap question...

I think this has been discussed a few times, but I just don't feel like looking for it haha.

If someone like Briere were to be injured all season, and went on LTIR, freeing up his cap space, and the Flyers were to spend the money on other players, what happens if during the playoffs, Briere is healthy to play?

i dont think it matters after the deadline because thats why teams end up having rental players then having to get rid of them, but i am not sure about that.

hmm..so that being said, and even though this wouldnt hapen, if the flyers used the cap space they had if briere was injured and signed like Sundin and Shanny, and Briere came back in the playoffs, everyone would be allowed to play?

I never knew that about the cap in the Playoffs.

According to NHLSCAP.com ( http://www.nhlscap.com/cap_faq.htm ) the salary cap lasts through the playoffs...

When can teams exceed the Upper Limit?

From the last day of training camp until June 30, the only time teams may exceed the Upper Limit is if a player has a LTI and replacing the player would put the team over the Upper Limit. In past years, teams could also exceed the Upper Limit due to performance bonuses in a player's contract as long as the team didn't exceed the Upper Limit by more than 7.5% [the "Performance Bonus Cushion"] ... meaning that after stripping out bonuses, no team could exceed the Upper Limit. For the 2008-09 season, the Upper Limit of $56.7 million is a hard cap - the 7.5% allowance is not allowed, and thus no team can carry over any overage to the 2009-10 season.

The last possible day of the 2009 Stanley Cup Playoffs is June 15th.

Further down it also says;

QUOTE
A team is considered to be in compliance with the salary cap if it has not spent more than the allowable limit to date, and if it could carry its current roster of active players (including players injured but not designated as having a long-term injury) and stay within the Lower and Upper Limits. Thus a team could carry $44 million until the trade deadline, then load up with players whose total cap hits were $40 million for the playoffs - as long as at the end of the season the team would not exceed the Upper Limit.

This reads as though he's saying that after the trade deadline you can let your team averaged salary balloon to 84 mil. as long as by the end of the playoffs you find a way to be in compliance. There is also the possibility of tagging cap room because we have some big salary players whose contracts expire at the end of the season.
