The real problem is that the Flyers aren't playing Flyers hockey. They aren't playing physical and they aren't crashing the net. A stay at home defenseman would help but who is out there to get. Until they play Flyers hockey, they won't break out of this funk.
Can we really blame them?
The league was so determined to make an example out of the Flyers last season that they have forced them into the same old stereotype...now the officials are so concerned with keeping the Flyers under close watch that anytime they touch a player the whistle blows...
They have a great PK unit that can move the puck and create shorthanded scoring chances...none of us can speak for what goes on in the locker room or at team meetings, but it just seems to me that they are afraid of taking penalties from playing the physical game...
Downie wasn't getting enough ice time in the NHL to develop because of the penalties he was called for, so they assigned him to the Phantoms and packaged him up with Eminger to bring in Carle...the Flyers are playing like they are terrified of taking stupid penalties...Prospal's goal was a perfect example of being afraid to take a too many men penalty on a line change and a great example of why it would have been better to take the penalty...
It wasn't a bad game, for the most part...lots of hustle, lots of shots on goal, but the defense fell asleep and the lightning capitalized...kukks was caught terribly out of position and it just goes to show that he needs consistent ice time...does he have a 2 way contract? he needs to play with the phantoms on a consistant basis if they are going to scratch him every couple of games...
On the subject of Lupul...he was bumped down a line, but showed some good hustle at both ends of the ice...the lines were switched when Asham was serving both of the 5 minute fighting penalties...Maybe they were rewarding ash for scoring against ottowa, but I saw him standing a few time watching richards instead of being a physical presense in front of the net...that is, when he wasn't in the box for fighting...one should have been plenty, but who knows what in the world would make the 2nd fight sound like a good idea just a few minutes out of the box from the 1st fiight...
...they hit 3 posts last night, which to me is a sign that they are trying too hard and need to get back to loving the game, having fun and playing for their teammates...
I don't think all is lost and I am keeping my never say die attitude because that is what I would expect of them...maybe it's just my background from playing sports growing up and through college, but I learned several lessons:
A team can bond through the strength of the coaching staff or in spite of the lack thereof...especially if they know there are people cheering them on...
It only takes one or two weak players to lose a game...a captain or leader can pick up the slack for them, but not 100% of the time...
It takes a team effort to hang onto the momentum - not just one player...Richards can kill himself to make a difference, but if none of his teammates on the ice help him hold onto it, then they have conceded defeat...
Sorry for rambling, but that's how I see it
