While the Flyers continue to wait for news from free agent winger Brendan Shanahan, they made a more critical move to strengthen their ailing defense, sending Steve Downie and Steve Eminger to Tampa Bay for 24-year-old defenseman Matt Carle.
According to a team source, the deal was made late Friday afternoon, and Carle is expected to be in uniform against his former team Saturday night. Carle, 6-foot, 210 pounds, was voted to the 2006-07 NHL all-rookie team while playing for San Jose. That season, he scored 11 goals and 31 assists. He was traded to Tampa Bay last season for Dan Boyle and Brad Lukowich.
Defensemen Ryan Parent (shoulder) and Randy Jones (hip) are sidelined with serious injuries.

Wow. I am completely shocked that we got Carle. I never even considered him as a possibility but I think a Downie and Eminger is a good package in the sense that it doesn't really affect the core of the team too much (but my perspective may be skewed because I always had a hunch that Downie would be traded.) I need to think more about whether or not I'm happy with getting Carle, though.

Right now I'm not a big fan of this deal. Carle has played pretty poorly since San Jose signed him to that big contract. He is not worth the cap hit so that's yet another overpaid player to add to our roster. I am not even sure how he fits under the cap at the moment. I also would have preferred a dman with vet experience over Carle.
On the other hand, he's young, with a lot of upside and he could easily still blossom with us.
I'll miss Downie though I was a huge fan of his.

Who was Carle paired with in the back end for Tampa? I understand he had a great rookie season...hopefully he will contribute some consistancy to the Flyers...He is also a lefty shot, correct?

Well Matt Carle was amazing before his huge contract, but he has alot of upside. Hes a more offensivly talented coburn in my eyes. Lets face it our defence is horrid right now and Carle will help it out. Like when Parent and Jones get back we got Kimmo,Coby,Carle,Alberts,Vannanan,Sbisa,Jones, and Parent.. so our defence is better. Downie is a sad sight to go but in the eyes of Homer and Stevens he didnt fit the Flyers system. When he gets a chance he will be very good, not Mike Richards good, but a 50 point guy.

I'm glad Eminger is gone, I could not stand him. Seriously, he's been awful. Sucks to see Downie go I guess. Though I wasn't as big a fan of his as some others, it won't be fun playing against him if he turns into a real player. He should at least have fun playing under Melrose.

imo, carle was dramatically stunted under ron wilson in sj. i hope it isn't irreversible. i think he would have thrived here under mclellan (much like we're seeing ehrhoff come to life now), but sj wanted a sure thing in boyle at the time, so off he went.
he's a solid defenseman, albeit young, and he has a heck of a shot. he's definitely going to be on your powerplay. he makes occasional gaffes, but he'll grow out of it. i wouldn't worry too much about his lack of production with the bolts... he may even start out a little slow with philly until he gets accustomed to his surroundings, but i think eventually he'll be one of your best. he's got the potential to be an all-star puck-moving defenseman. he just needs a coach who won't put a leash on him. he needs to have some offensive freedom and not be scolded like a little puppy a la ron wilson.
some have suggested that he has an attitude problem and that's why wilson rubbed him the wrong way, but i don't think so. wilson rubbed a lot of sharks the wrong way (insert tail to head joke here).

I don't really know if Homer's worked on any trades with Montreal or what the relationship is there or if MTL would be willing to trade with us, since we'd be a threat in the playoffs. I think it's most likely we'll see a deal for Pavelec because he'll cost us the least. The people on this board have really sold me on Schneider, though, and Vancouver could definitely use a little more offensive depth.
