We were at the Islanders-Flyers game the other night and I was having a discussion with my friend as to why anyone over the age of 13 would get a jersey made with their own name/number on it.
I would rather have a blank jersey than put my own name on one. I can't imagine what would possess someone to put their own name on a professional sports jersey. It seems kinda ridiculous. Unless you're playing in a bar league or using it for practice or something, that I could see. But to wear to a game? I understand that players come and go, but why would you do that?
For the most part,
it seems universally frowned upon, but I was wondering what people here thought about it.
I was also astounded at not only how many bootleg jerseys I saw, but also how astonishingly bad some of them looked. Wrong fonts, wrong colors, iron-on patches and numbers. I can see why they sell for so cheap on eBay.

I know a lot of people don't like personally customized jerseys, but I don't really care if people have those or not. Either way is fine with me. They're still supporting their favorite team like everyone else, so I don't really see a reason to think it's stupid. To each their own. (I don't have one of those myself, but it's not like I'd rather die than have one. Maybe someday I'll have one. It's not a big deal to me.)
As for the poll, a blank jersey is always the safest bet and if I don't have any real personal favorites on the team at that moment, that's the one I get. It's not a must for me to have a name/number on my jersey. If there's a certain player on the team I like especially, then I'll get his jersey.

To each their own, esp. if it's their own $$$. Who are we to tell someone how to express their support for a team? That being said, I prefer player jsys.
Also, I'm not sure there are that many "bootleg" Flyers jsys out there as hockey jsys are generally a bit more oomplicated to produce and hockey is not that popular with consumers en masse.
I've noticed Flyers fans do tend to hold on to their old school authentics and replicas for a long time, which were made by numerous manufacturers with varying quality through the years.

Over here, people always have their own name and number of their choice on the back of their football/soccer shirts, but that's a good point, I don't see many people having their own name on the back of a Flyers jersey. Interesting.

I agree, very very lame
My biggest problem is... i never know who to get, a classic player who is always remembered for a flyer (ie Clarke, Hextal etc..) or someone current?...the fear with someone current is the trade or UFA factor, so I am always sketchy on who to get.

Most likely these sports jerseys are knock-offs (unauthorized copies) shipped in from overseas. These fakes usually come with poor quality materials and inferior manufacturing processes. Bad stitching, faded colors, off-sizes, and all-around cheap appearance are common characteristics of the counterfeit jersey.
These same unscrupulous vendors have gone high tech by selling their fake merchandise on the internet. If you want to try your hand at buying that favorite sports jersey at one of the online auctions - think again! It is estimated that up to 95% of the Mitchell & Ness throwback jerseys sold on eBay are counterfeits.
Law enforcement agencies are starting to police these fake sports jerseys and the vendors that sell them. The counterfeit jerseys are being confiscated and the vendors arrested. Selling or manufacturing counterfeit jerseys is a very serious crime. Penalties for a first offense are a fine of up to $2 million and 10 years in prison. A second offense virtually doubles these penalties.
Despite these efforts, there is still a huge black market for the counterfeit jerseys. The policing agencies are just not staffed up to stop the large inflow of these fake jerseys coming in from overseas.
All you have to do is do a quick search on
eBay. There are tons of them and they're horrible.
How about
this one? Or this
masterpiece? That was just the ones I found on the first page. And that's just eBay. There's literally hundreds of other stores online that ship counterfeit jerseys from overseas and sell them dirt cheap. Sometimes, it's a good deal. Sometimes, they look like the stuff you get on eBay. It's a crapshoot. I think its a safe bet that someone selling an "authentic" jersey for under $75 might be trying to sell you a counterfeit jersey.

When i was in Peewee hockey I was around 12ish my dad bought me one with my last name on it, now that I think of it the line I played on all got Flyers jerseys and we watched them during the 03/04 run in Philly and got them signed but Keith , Gags and Kappy after the game. I considered changing but never did just have it in my room now, and I just bought a Richie one to go, with the Richie Kitchener Rangers one i got. But would I get one now? probably not but its great for little kids, I know when I was 12 I thought I felt like I was apart of the Flyers wearing it. GO FLYERS GO

Hey, kind of related to this topic. I have a Richards jersey that I bought at the Wachovia Center last year. The ones you buy there are ironed on. The nameplate on the back is coming off in areas, and I tried re-ironing on to get it to stick again, but it is not working. honestly, forget that iron on crap and send the jersey to icejerseys.com to have the name and number stitched on. They're licensed to perform NHL lettering and numbering to spec. I got my authentic Richards jersey from them. I get compliments all the time, regardless of the person's team affiliation. Yup, it's that good. The customization is like $79, but sometimes there's a sale for $59. Trust me, it's worth it.

I can see the market demand for bootleg Crysbys in Pittsburgh, particulary as they went deep into playoffs last year. However, the fact that fake junk is generally available online doesn't mean Flyers fans who attend games actually purchase them in significant numbers. In Philly, the bootleg jsy problem is moreso for Eagles (faded falling apart Desean Jacksons) and to relatively lesser extent Phillies (way too small nameplate font Utleys) from what I see at their respective venues, in the parking lots and round town.
For the majority of Flyers fans, I give them much credit for spending their $$$ on official authentic or replica jsys blank or otherwise. For the record, I have never seen a Flyers fan wearing a fake Sand Knit electrical tape-numbered hockey jsy

If there wasn't a demand for the Flyers stuff, they wouldn't keep selling it. I only posted that article because it was a recent example of how pervasive the illegal jersey trade is.
You'll excuse me if I put more stock in actual documented evidence and my own observations rather than your anecdotal opinion--especially given that I personally saw a ton of ****** fake jerseys at the game and said so clearly in the first post.

You got to have an authentic jersey. I did make a personal jersy using the CCM Black format for my Fraternatiy. It had the letters on the front, My number on the back, my nickname on top of that and the chapter and class letters on the sleves. Every Fraternity used bad football jerseys, so I made mine. I voted for a jersey with a player's name on it. I don't have any problem with wearing an older jersey with an older player's name on it, unless that player went the way of Lindros or T.O. Even with Lindros though, it's been so long that it's not a big deal anymore. Blank would be my second choice if I didn't want to choose or didn't have one person that I really liked. I'm glad to see you picked a hard-hitting topic for discussion. What is this, a middle school discussion where we are picking on people for what's on their jerseys or the quality of jerseys? I bought one last with my name on it and #22 because of Tocchet, who was on my first jersey. I personally did not have enough confidence in any of the current Flyers to spend $300 and then have the player get traded or hurt, or maybe just turn out to be a worthless coward of a player. And GD, I'm proud of having my name on a Flyers jersey.

If it really bothers you, you could ask a mod to move it to Miscellaneous.

Just adding my twoney, not trying to suggest a regime change or anything like that.
One thing I "try" to keep in mind when I see someone in a "questionable" jersey is that no one knows the situation surrounding the acquistion of that item. For example, maybe a naive (not meant to be an insult) parent, grandparent, sibling, or girlfriend gave it as a gift. That might be the best gift the wearer ever received . . . even if it looks like crap.
