Did anyone go to the game and see this?

I would say that it was a Road Flare and not a 'Stink Bomb' ...

I thought road flares were meant to create a small flame not create a massive fog on the highway laugh.gif

Add a flat 3 inch ice surface to this and you have a similar situation ...

That doesn't explain the bad smell. Plus from a pranksters perspective it be more logical to throw a stink bomb then just some road flare on the ice.

I was there. Someone threw it right after the no-goal in OT. It looked like a road flare and produced a bit of smoke before it was put out. The Perp was pointed out, so they probably got him.
Wrenfield
When I saw it landing on the ice, I thought it was a flare too. Not sure why someone would throw anything on the ice considering the reputation Philly fans have already. It was an interesting way to end the game...

And yay if they caught the guy!

They described the smell as if it was the worst thing they have ever smelled. Seemed unusal that a road flare would send everyone retreating and the smell was described so bad. Unless the announcers where just trying to make the fans sound even worse but from my knowledge it was also Philly feed that said that so I am not sure. If the smell was as bad as they said it was I would find it hard to believe it was just a road flare.

Who takes one of those to a hockey game?! dry.gif

A small concern I have is that the NHL might hand out some sort of punishment to the Flyers organisation because of this. Has anyone heard anything that might support this.

If not, no news is good news, I guess.

I would be terribly dissapointed if the organization gets fined because of one ***hole .. whats next a strip search on the way in to the game ... tongue.gif

Well, the Devils sure are crying about it. Patrik Elias even suggests the Flyers should play in an empty arena as a punishment.

I was at the game, and everyone was pointing to what seemed like Ed Sniders box, or right above his box. All the ushers around the section I was sitting at (110) were asking each other if they saw who did it..

Who ever did is a complete ***.
propp16
Screw the person that did this. This city has been doing its best to shake its bad reputation and then this jerk has to go and set us back another 10 years.
WalkTogether4EverIn08
contrary to popular belief, 90-95% of all philly fans are actually good people. we are smart/knowledgable and passionate about our teams....the problem is when something like this happens, and the national media gets ahold of it, its not reported as one a-hole acts stupid at a philly sporting event, its philly fans act stupid.......it dosent matter what we do or how we act at games, lets just face it, we are always going to be (wrongly) judged as bad people/sports fans....
mchrissy77
Well according to all the papers, it was a road flare the perp threw onto the ice and then he used the 11th Street exit to escape.

There is precedent for this kind of punishment in football (soccer) over here in Europe. Teams have been fined or forced to play behind closed doors before now.

I just hope nothing like that happens.

Has one smoke bomb been enough to close the doors, though? I know clubs have been fined, but there are still smoke bombs and torches thrown around in pretty much every Serie A game and they don't have to play behind closed doors because of that. It usually needs something more to happen if they have to play in empty arenas, like big fights in the stands or damaging the stadion area.
rodeobarbie
What was the point of something that rediculous? I must admit that I am a little embarrassed this morning to be a Philadelphia sports fan. People like this ruin things for the rest of us. That idiot not only effected the Devils, but our boys as well. The boys on the ice even looked a little embarrassed about the whole thing.

True, but since nothing like this (to my knowledge) has ever happened in the NHL, who knows how they will react.

I'm probably just being uber-paranoid.

I think there is a reason to be a little paranoid considering it's Broduer who's crying and it's the big bad Flyers again.

At least the Flyers won.

This could become a new tradition, instead of throwing an Octopus on the ice in Detroit, how about a smoke bomb in Philly every time we go into OT tongue.gif

It gave the good guys a rest and we scored 30 seconds later, how can we (fans) have more impact on the outcome of a game.

Of course I'm just being sarcastic and it wasn't classy whatsoever but the thing is, if the smoke bomb wouldn't have been thrown, the outcome of the game

would have been different for sure, and maybe we would have lost, so I hope this was a one-time event and it won't happen again.

If Brodeur stopped crying, focused and got on with his game, then he may of seen Carters deflected shot.*

I think this is deleteding great. I thought that it was funny that Jeff Carter was laughing about it after the game. I'd love to know who did it so I can thank him for the win.. haha. Anyways, who cares. Philly fans have a bad reputation whether this happens another 50 times or not. Philly fans are insane and its never going to stop. Thats what makes Philly fans so unique. Just embrace it. This would only ever happen in Philly and that is why it is so awesome.

Yeah, I'm going to have to go ahead and disagree with you here. You should never do something purely because it's your "reputation." The morons who throw stink bombs are in the minority and the rest of us have to live with this crap.

Hypothetically speaking, let's say you got a bad reputation as a child molester because someone you know was accused of molesting a kid. Would you embrace it and molest kids because that's your reputation? It doesn't make sense, does it?

Remember when a Caps fan hit Jeff Carter in the head during the playoffs with a beer bottle and he called the fans "really classy?" I would bet money that many Philly fans said a lot of insulting things about the person who did that. Why support this when it is clearly so much worse?

I just hate when people have to put a damper on Philly sports fans. Everyone else already hates us and thinks that we are like the worst people ever. This is ridiculous. I wish people would have found the person and proceeded to beat the you know what out of him. We are crazy and passionate, but we are not some heathens.

1. Molesting children is way different then a crazed fan throwing a stink bomb on the ice. Comparing the two makes no sense.

2. You are forgetting that it is a hockey game, not a terrorist attack on America. Fans are going to do stupid things all the time, and it happens in all different cities.

3. It is Philly's reputation that has tons of other hockey players feeling intimidated when they come here to play us. Whether we have a crazy reputation or not, it is one of the most unique reputations in the league. How could you not love the fact that people are actually scared to play us at home? I for one love it.

Now, that being said, I do agree that it was a stupid move on the persons behalf, but I just don't understand why everyone is getting their panties in a bunch about it. This kind of stuff is going to continue to happen for years and years to come. The fact is, Philly fans are insane, and there isn't really anything anyone can do about it because, lets face it, Philadelphia fans are extremely thirsty for a championship, trophy, title, super bowl, something. Some fans just choose to express their happiness and anger in way different ways.

I'm curious as to how many people who think this is an act worth defending are people who currently live within the area.

Some of us, for whatever reason, don't live in or near Philadelphia anymore. I moved away for my job, but I'm still a huge Philly sports fan.

I'm guessing the defenders are people who don't have to deal with opposing fans constantly complaining about the terrible reputation our fans have outside of Philly like those of us who live in enemy territory. I constantly defend our fans by pointing out that other cities have fans that do stupid stuff all the time, too. I firmly believe that. But when things like this happen, it destroys any credibility I might have by being a good fan who doesn't do stupid stuff because people always remember crap like this.

It's been 40 years and we still haven't lived down Santa Claus.

This is a good thread. People get offended when I say Philadelphia's fan base isn't very classy but all the support speaks for itself. Maybe you guys should start your own tradition and when someone scores a hattrick just throw stink bombs on the ice laugh.gif Tourists outside will walk by and say, "What is that smell?" and locals will turn to him and say, "That is the sweet smell of victory."

Thank you for this post. I hear crap about being a Philly fan daily, living just outside NYC. It's really too bad that this one idiot had to do this because we will be hearing about this for an eternity. They've been talking about the Santa Clause incident for 40 years, I can't even believe how long they're going to go on this one. This time they actually have something on us (even though it was one idiot and the rest of the crowd directed the a-hole chant towards he/she). I'm always defending Philadelphia fans but one single thing like this makes it very tough to do.
