Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren gave the following update on Flyers center Danny Briere prior to tonight's Flyers-Devils game at the Prudential Center:
"Danny has a slight tear in his reptus abdominis, which is a stomach muscle," said Holmgren. "He will have surgery at Hahnemann Hospital tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. He will be out of the lineup approximately 3-4 weeks."

In my delusional mind Danny was our magic bullet to get Luongo. Vancouver is very desperate for a top 6 forward and they'd prefer a center.

Giroux needs to light up the AHL, quick, so we actully have a reason to call him up. I jus wish we'd trade Briere, somewhere, anywhere. I was excited for him at first, he's okay but we can deal w/o him, maybe even be better depending on who we get in a possible trade for him and who get called up or signed..etc. No one would take that salary though. Who knows tho, maybe whoever we bring up to replace Briere will light it up, we need something.

I really wish I understood the Briere hatred. I know he gets paid a lot and doesn't play defense but he puts pucks in the net and, last time I checked, that was a pretty important part of the game. People cry over Kukkonen being scratched and cheer when Briere is injured. It doesn't make sense.
WillDaBeast

People need to realize Briere is only 1 player. He is not solely responsible for the Flyers poor defense. The Flyers can get rid of Briere and replace him with a proven defenseman and they will still be a poor defensive team.
Even so Briere is not even that bad of a defensive player if you are to blame anyone for his defensive numbers you blame the coach. Briere can be an effective defensive player (not great but effective) when used correctly. Briere is not a big guy you can't expect him to be great when you want him 2 be physical with players who are much bigger and stronger then he is. I think he is doing a rather good job considering he isn't in the best system for a player of his stature.
Also without Briere you hurt the PP.

I do not get the Briere hatred either. He was leading the team in points so far this year. People are still going to look at that awful stretch he had last year. But he was there in the playoffs when it counted. And he has started off this season well. We got a point on wednesday because he tied the game. Do we throw Richie under the bus for all the turnovers he makes on the PP? Gagne playing with Briere will help Briere's plus/minus. Well it would have, but Briere is hurt.

I know, I don't get it either. It's always been like that though, even when he was on Buffalo. People just don't like him for some reason. And when the team loses, he seems to get the blame. He never gets any credit. Right now he is leading in points but no one cares. Last season, he still managed to get 72 points and that was a bad season. It makes NO sense at all. People don't realize how good he is and how much he is needed.

Completely OT but I'm a nurse at Hahnemann maybe I'll see him or have him as a patient tomorrow. Although, I definitely wouldn't bother him since he is getting surgery and all. Anyways, sucks he will be out and hopefully he will get better soon.

Seriously. Noone thinks Briere is bad player per se. But he earns to much AND he is Stevens lost kid, who has come home..... So when one gets pi.ssed at stevens, it is easy to add Briere too.
Personally, I dig danny as a person. I think he could be one of my greater friends , if I knew him. Hockey level, he does not really fit into Flyers. He is smart enough to do ok games here, but at his salary, flyers could have got 2-3 players more suited, doing a better Flyer game, than danny
Its the salary cap man. Which is not really Dannys fault, but homers. But then again, viewing the situation as it is, Danny could be one of our better arguments to get a real defense.. Honestly, everyone who "hates" Briere would actually loved him, if he played here for a $4 mill per year

I have to add....its not like he will end up in the gutter with $4 mill pr year either......

He comes up with clutch goals. In the playoffs last season, when he was with Buffalo, and against San Jose. I can't believe the lack of respect this guy gets. How about Gagne is a waste of money because he is rarely healthy. I mean it is stupid. Last year he didn't have the right support around him during the season which is why he struggled. But he has been strong since the end of last season. If you want to look for overpaid players lets look at Carter going for 5 million a year. 5 million a year to hog the puck and never pass the puck. Does he get primary assists? Or Randy Jones for $2.5 million. If we want to look at cap troubles look at things like that, especially Jones. Briere doesn't deserve this treatment. He is a leader and a quality offensive threat. Which can be balanced out with the defense of Gagne. If it was back to that free agent period, I would still take Briere over Drury and Gomez. And even though our PP scored 2 times tonight, I think that was just one game. For the next 4 weeks, you will miss Briere on the PP.

People seem to believe that since Briere is making over 50 mil for next 7 years and isn't putting up numbers like Ovechkin he just plain out sucks. People forget that even with his slump and his injuries last season he still ended up in 2nd with the team in points! Then up until the Pens series led the Playoffs..Up until Richies's awesome night tonight he led the team yet again and this team hasn't even won a game until tonight.
He's a good player. He can pass well, has one H*ll of a wrist shot and puts the puck in the net. I won't argue that his pay is high, but he's not Ovechkin, he's not a Gretzky, and he'll never be any higher than just Danny Briere. People who hate him simply just want more from him and you're asking for too much. When he's in a slump, I can understand but when he's on top of his game people still seem to hate him. Everyone is entilted to their opinion and you don't have to like him, but you can not deny that he's a good player and a very valuable asset to this team.
