Or maybe they are protecting their image

The organization is protecting it's image by by shutting down a charitable event because they aren't getting their piece of the pie? Good call Flyers.

I thought you didnt renew last year?

Nope I had tickets last year. I said during the year last year I probably wouldn't be renewing this upcoming year because prices keep going up. This whole fiasco just sealed the deal.

A lot more went into it than just them 'feeling like' shutting it down apparently. I'm not saying this would have happened AT ALL but it was an event that featured Flyers players to raise money for charity...what would happen if the organizer, who was not a member of the Flyers org, decided to just pocket the money raised? Again, I'm not saying this would've happened - the organizer posts on other boards I'm on and seemed to have his heart in the right place - but with people today you just never know.
mchrissy77
I agree with NikiPHL, I'm sure the last thing anybody in the Flyers PR and Legal Dpt wanted to do was pull the plug on a charity fund raiser. With so many players involved, plus Flyers alum, it puts the organization in an awkward position.
newbieflyersfan
I hope they can still do something that is like the idea of Cote Carnival, but without the unneeded expenses as the Flyers Wives Carnival. That was outrageous.

Absolutely. I blame the people responsible for taking care of the important details of running an event in order to sponsor a charity through channels they aren't fimiliar with. When it comes to a franchise, specifically the Flyers in this case (or any brand name for that matter) it is essential to get approval of every single thing. Sure it seems bureaucratic but consider that if anything questionable occured at this event, the public would look to the Flyers brand rather than the event managers.
Public relations law is a betch.
SoJer4
Its back on!

Guess the Flyers got involved, you can order tickets now, link is on the Flyers homepage.

I'll be there. tongue.gif

well i think they are making him close up his t shirt biz, so i would think an invitation to continue working on the carnival would be unlikely

why are they making him close his t-shirt biz....wtf. where do you hear this info?

It was on his site. They are making him donate all proceeds of the Cote shirt to the MS charity and he has to stop selling certain shirts and he is closing his shop down after they are all sold. I think it has something to do with trademark violations.
FlyersFanTN
I thought he was being pretty careful with the trademark rights. well that sucks, but if he didnt do his homwork correctly on that stuff, he's got nobody to blame but himself. Still, sucks @ss though, I feel bad for him. I bought a few shirts last year. anyone interested, go to his site.

he did everything on the "up and up". i know he mentioned that he contacted team officials before making any shirts. but once the lawyers got involved he was screwed.

Poor Guy sad.gif
He works this whole time to create a business, without violations and being so careful, and now his shirt/hat business is being shut down. And his created carnival with all the time spent and hard work, and now Comcast is taking it over. He was screwed over.
5hole, if you read this (cause i know you come on here), i feel so bad man. Eff them.
FlyersFanTN
agreed 5hole. they took your idea and screwed you over. Hopefully you still be allowed to at least attend the carnival.

they should let him keep making the shirts, just donate half of what they cost to MS
his shirts are nice id have to say

Hypothetically, let's say my 19 yr old brother and his friend buy tix to the Carnival for $20. At the last second they can't go and give my wife and I there tix. We are both over 21 they are both under 21 ($20<$50). Do you think we'd be turned away? I think we'd be allowed in and able to drink with the under age tix as long as we had identification. I don't want to rip off the charity , but c'mon isn't that easy? Isn't that what some of you do by purchasing the Family section tix during the year?

P.S.- Don't reply with the usual you're cheap and how could you do that, I was just wondering hypothetically. Don't forget it was Comcast who ripped this whole idea off.

i believe he was donating 100% of the proceeds of the cote shirts to MS from the beginning.

edit- sorry, just looked it up, he said "a portion of the procceds will go to fight MS".

Now they are making him close his site? WOW, talk about low class. I'm so glad I didn't renew my season tickets this year. I'll watch the games (as players have nothing to do with this stuff) but that organization will get as little as my money as possible this year.

Low class? They have to protect their trademarks or they won't be able to in future cases. Not to mention he was making money off of the team so I don't feel sorry for him one bit.

Yeah low class, that's what I said. This is simply nothing more than a case of bullying because the Flyers brass wanted their piece of the pie.

Look around his site. His merchandise didn't have the official logo on it at all. The only one that did was a vote for Richards t-shirt that was APPROVED by the Flyers Charities. Other than that, no trademark infringement at all.

B!tching about this guy "making money off the team" is like saying music acts aren't making any money because of Napster. Poor little Flyers/Metallica. If anything the guy was bringing more attention to the team (which they should like). Idiots.

Without saying whether I agree or disagree with the situation, it may have something to do with his use of the players' names & images, which are probably protected as "property" of the Flyers.

Just a guess...

Which is funny considering the property (the players) didn't seem to give 1 iota about him using their likeness.

Gee, thanks for that insight professor. I hadn't realized "that's how it is" until you told me.

Knowing what I've seen you say in regards to certain social and political issues, something tells me you wouldn't accept that "oh well that's the way it is" answer, especially in regards to certain things about a certain administration. And you shouldn't either.

Because something is that way isn't a good enough answer as to whether something is ethical, fair, or simply right/wrong.

The Flyers bullied this guy bottom line. All because of corporate greed.

I'm not arguing with any of the Goliath, moral, ethical, or fair comments. You know me well enough to know I agree there.

I'm just saying that this is how the corporate legal world works. We want our capitalism at all costs, but then b*tch when the powerful enforce their power. It's a microcosm of how our society works and it sucks, but it is what it is. Fight the man.
jesslovesflyers
i can understand the organIzation wanting to protect it's interests, especially if the team is taking part in a charity event with an open bar. in regards to the t shirt business, i was under the impression that all the shirts were approved by the flyers. i remember because there were requests for the megadeth security shirt but the guy said he couldn't because he couldn't get approval for it. it is stupid. his shirts were affordable and very clever. honestly did the team really feel like it was losing millions because of this guy? if anything it gets more product out there and can only help the flyers.

stupid lawyers!!!!! i wonder if the league anything to do with this unsure.gif
FiveHoleFrankie
Yes, that does suck. I bought a few T-shirts and a hat from his site too. Reasonably priced and good stuff. Oh well...
