Yeah, the Be a pro mode is so addictive and fun. The only problem is i like to fight, but then i have to sit in the box for 5 minutes and its boring tongue.gif sad.gif

One thing I don't like about the fighting system is that you can't choose your fights. I'll be skating up the ice when suddenly, I'll be fighting. If you remember a few years back they used to let you press select(PS2) if you wanted to fight. I wish they still had that feature.

On xbox 360 they do have that feature. you press y to fight. If you don't press it there usually isnt a fight.

HOW IN THE WORLD IS BRIERE RATED HIGHER THAN RICHARDS???????????

....stupid NHL 09 staff.

I don't think he is in the 360 version. If I remember correctly, Briere is an 83, and Richards is an 86.

That first roster update was updating recent moves that were made just prior to release. Giroux is not in the game yet because of NHLPA licensing issues. A rookie can not be a part of these rosters until they play at least one NHL game. Once that happens, another roster update will be worked on and released.

For the PS3, pressing triangle makes you fight, it shouldn't do it automatically.

I know that, but sometimes I'll hook a guy and I'll end up getting into a fight.

Marty is 84 overall and Nitty is 80 overall. rather fair on Biron's end, but Nitty should be higher.

alot of these rankings are bs. Briere an 84? really now? and Gagne an 86? Timonen at 83? Carter only 82 also. wtf?

EA's ratings system is pretty flawed. I worked on the ratings for FIFA 09 and the way they do it is pretty inefficient and disorganized. I don't know if every department does it the same way (soccer vs. hockey), but the way the soccer department does it is pretty bad. They seemed to be improving the system as they went along, but it still wasn't perfect by game launch time.

Overall doesn't really matter. For example Thierry Henry is only 87 but his heading is like 56 so it brings his stats down pretty significantly.

EA doesn't own the rights to players outside of the NHL. They can only create a player once they have played an NHL game. So Giroux should be in it but I guess they just forgot however guys like Nodl they can't legally make. The player must also be part of the players association or they can't use his name and picture.

Roster update will come in the first few months of the season (Nov or Dec). I think with the rookies they will wait to see if the Junior eligible guys play the 9 games or whatever before putting them in the team.

The current rosters are a major dissapointment and are very similar to NHL08. EA need to have a date set where the rosters are set and stick to it.

In my opinion they should be in the game if they have signed a contract regardless of NHL games played. ie Stamkos and other 08 draftees as well as 07 draftees

yeah nhl 2k9 blows. i got nhl 09 when it cam out first day and it is probably the best game i have ever played (despite the rosters). just look at all the reviews online, that should paint a pretty good picture. nhl 2k9 comes nowhere near nhl 09 in the reviews. just play be a pro for like one game. you will be addicted.

How have people been setting up their lines?

NHL 08 was a very good game and NHL 09 is better however it really just looks like NHL 08 with a few things added. I guess since NHL 08 got so much praise they got scared that if they changed much NHL games may take the backseat to the other major sports games again.

They even decided to keep the same player pictures from 08 laugh.gif

If you read, or look at the rosters, Potulny and Syvret are on the same team(Edmonton's farm team). Potulny was moved, but Syvret was not. It's simply because EA isn't competent enough to make sure they get their rosters at least as close to correct as they can before their release. This is nothing new.

And no, they don't just keep the 2008 roster at their release. This should really be obvious by just looking at the Flyers roster alone if you have any clue what their 08-09 roster looks like. Most of the moves that were made in the off-season have been completed. But, again, they've made a number of mistakes. Again, nothing new.

Yes, updates will come in an online roster update. But, as has been already mentioned, it won't happen until rookies play at least one game on their NHL team. EA has nothing to do with this. They can't place these rookies on their NHL teams until this happens because of their NHLPA licensing rights. Email EA all you'd like. It will be a waste of your time, and won't be able to change a thing.

EVERY year EA releases an NHL game, there are roster errors. It's inevitable, and expecting it to change will only continue to disappoint. Have patience, and the updated rosters will be released in due time. But don't expect them to be perfect and still not have errors. It will. Period.

On a side note: Those of you expecting Giroux to be in the rosters already don't seem to realize what EA can and can't do legally with their rosters. Giroux didn't play on an NHL or AHL squad last season. And for that reason, EA isn't licensed to have him included in their game yet. They don't have licensing rights to include players from the QMJHL in NHL 09.

Agreed. I've played both, and 2k9 comes no where near the quality of NHL 09 as far as gameplay is concerned. Neither game is perfect, of course. But 2k9 is miles behind NHL 09 this year.

And that's what 08 was to 07 and what '10 will be to 09. No one ever completely reconstructs their game from year to year, they just add on to last years. It's all going to "look" the same, just with new features and such.

They kept the same roster photos because they're lazy and wanted to get this game out on the streets ASAP I think.

Anyway, my lineups are as follows for those who asked:

Gagne - Briere - Hartnell
Downie - Richards - Lupul
Upshall - Carter - Knuble
Asham - Metropolit - Cote

Timonen - Coburn
Eminger - Jones
Vaananen - Parent

Niitty 1
Biron 2

Andy, Not having a crack at you cause I agree with most of what you said. However did Giroux play 2 games with the Flyers late last season yet still doesn't make EA's roster. Dont have an opinion whether he should be there or not but I will reiterate 2 points I feel are crucial for all to understand the roster creation system better.

1. EA sports should set a date and have it completely up to date at the set date. (ie Sept 1st each year) If trades, signings etc occur after that time they are included in the first roster update.
2. A set standard on new players (rookies or UFA signings) playing games for a club prior to being included. This is where I believe strongly that any player with a professional contract should be included with that franchise's squads NHL or AHL. Giroux had this last season by the end of the year. EA need to discuss this with NHLPA because NFL09 had its entire rookie class in it before they were signed and it makes the game a lot more realistic and new.

Finally I hope that with the roster updates this year they do not effect trades like last season. Way to many times in dynasty mode i had the error of too many nhl players on this team cannot trade or too many goalies cannot trade crap which was very frustrating when i was trying to fix philly's defense by trading Nittymaki and Knuble for some other players.

I hear what you're saying, lockwells. And yes, Giroux did play 2 games last season with the Flyers. However, if I understand this licensing agreement correctly, in order for a rookie, who plays with an NHL club after EA's "rookie roster update", to be included in next year's roster released with the game, that rookie needs to play the minimum number of games on NHL teams to qualify for passing their "Junior" status. I believe that amount is 9 games, as you mentioned earlier. Not positive about that, but I know it's more than 2 games. So, any rookies that don't play those minimum number of games aren't eligible to be a part of the roster released when the game hits the shelves the next year. However, if they play just one game with an NHL club prior to their "rookie roster update", they are eligible to be included in that update.

Hope that makes some sense at least. It's a bit tough to explain without sounding very confusing.

EDIT:
QUOTE (lockwells @ Sep 30 2008, 10:41 PM) *
EA need to discuss this with NHLPA because NFL09 had its entire rookie class in it before they were signed and it makes the game a lot more realistic and new.

And, just to be accurate, the NHLPA and NFLPA are completely different entities, and there are two completely different licensing agreements with these two games and associations. And I believe there were about 20-25 rookies missing from the rookie class when Madden 09 was released anyway. You can always count on errors to be made when EA Sports creates their rosters or roster updates.

In a way yes but not entirely. They don't reconstruct the game year to year but they really did not change a lot about NHL 09. Besides the ratings and extremely outdated pictures it is also the minor things in gameplay. Like if you score a goal it is the same celebrations as 08. The small clips between plays remain the same as 08. The commentation is extremely similar they use a lot of the same lines not much of a difference from 08.

With all other major sporting games they update those things every year but NHL just seemed to ignore it.

The other major games manage to do all of that stuff along with the other things. They all have basically the same amount of time to get all the games ready NHL should be able to handle these things.

I enjoy NHL 09 a lot but I feel it has a lot of squandered potential.

Yea mate it all makes sense just a shame about the inevitable errors which can make or break a serious hockey gamers heart (this is not me rolleyes.gif )

In regards to the NHLPA and NFLPA i understand the differences each organisation has and that EA has a monopoly on NFL however maybe NHL and supporting organisations should look to provide better service to EA and allow them to create a more in depth product... NHL AHL ECHL CHL OHL blah blah blah, to encourage more fans to enjoy hockey as a sport on tv and gaming devices. After all its a massive promotional tool for young kids. Imagine growing up supporting your local London Knights and being able to start your Pro Mode experience here as a 15 year old and go through each year blah blah blah.

Disclaimer: I am not a Knights fan but its the only team I can recall at the present time.

Until the roster update comes out I will just have to play with my created Claude Giroux (Overall 99) who was a healthy scratch last night for not scoring a hatrick for the 3rd consecutive game. Replaced him with Riley Cote... what a laugh. Hurry up EA Sports my mental ability is depending on your roster updates
